Wassily Kandisnky, 1866-1944

Russian-born German expressionist painter, 1866-1944.

Born in Russia 1866.

First name is spelled Wassily or Vassily, pronounced Vassily.

Taught law in Moscow until 1896.

Moved to Munich, Germany in 1896, where he began his art career.

One of two founding members of the German Expressionist group, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). The other founder was Franz Marc.

Thought to be the pioneer of purely abstract painting.

Moved back to Russia 1914-1921; painted little in this time.

Married Nina Andreievskaya in 1916.

Taught at the Bauhaus school from 1922 to 1933.

Moved to Neuilly-sur-Seine, France in 1933.

Died in 1944, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.

Influenced by music, science, philosophy, spirituality.
